Byron was left with second- and third-degree burns

floor.

The criminal justice major at University of
Illinois-Chicago had been heating up the water to make macaroni and cheese when
he flew into a rage at his Chicago apartment.
Kyle Voissem, 21, faces up to three years in prison
for the attack. Judge James Obbish this week found him guilty of animal cruelty
to the 18-month-old dog, after a two-day bench trial.

The court heard Voissem was busted after giving his
pet to the the Anti-Cruelty Society so he could be treated. The Society called
for charges to be filed against the student and he was arrested in December
2011. Byron has recovered from the brutal attack and has been adopted by a new
family.
Voissem, a first class gymnast from Wisconsin has
been removed from his team’s 2012/13 roster and suspended from the college. He
will be sentenced on May 20 and faces up to three years in prison. Voissem has
also been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, the Chicago Sun-Times
reported.
Byron was adopted soon after arriving at the Society
and is now back to full health.
