Aviation Minister’s Cargo Perishable Initiative, the
Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar has been designated as one of the
nation’s Agro-Perishable cargo airports.
This was disclosed by the Director, Cargo
Development, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Rowland Ofule during a
visit to the Cross River State Governor’s office in Calabar, where he was
received by the state Acting Governor, Mr. Efiok Cobham.
Mr. Roland remarked that over the years, local
farmers have faced the challenge of access to markets, adding that the
initiative will allay their fears and encourage them to be more productive
thereby boosting the economy of the state and the nation at large.

He also stressed the need for farmers to be properly
educated on this initiative.
On his part, Mr. Cobham expressed his appreciation
of the choice of Calabar Airport to drive the Federal Government’s
transformation agenda. He also requested the Federal Government to extend the
airport runway in line with current realities, saying this would enable
aircraft with bigger tonnage ply the airport without hitch, as well enable it
function optimally to meet up its new status as a cargo airport.
