Information reaching us reveals
that 96 pregnant women have tested positive for HIV in 28 health facilities in
the Brong Ahafo Region, between the months of January and June this year. Ghananews
This came to light
following the screening of 3,928 women during ante-natal periods. The Regional
Disease Control Officer, Samuel Addo has disclosed.
According to him, the
current figure is an increase from last year’s 74 pregnant women who underwent
the screening exercise, saying the number is alarming.
It creates the
opportunity for the unborn babies to be given the needed care in order to
ensure they do not contract the virus, Mr Addo appealed.
The surge in the HIV
cases he explained could also mean that more women are now attending ante-natal
care and have subjected themselves to HIV test.
The affected women will
undergo the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV to save their
unborn babies, Mr Addo stated.
